Spooky Season is Here

Well, it’s finally autumn, Instagram’s favorite season. The weather is changing, the days are shortening, and Christmas trees compete with Jack-o-lanterns for shelf space in stores. In honor of taking an awesome walk yesterday under a sunless grey sky, I decided to jettison my reflections on York (albeit temporarily) and make a list of fun things to do between now and Black Friday.

  1. Buy a pumpkin.
  2. Carve a Jack-o-lantern.
  3. Make fresh pumpkin pie or soup.
  4. Roast spicy pumpkin seeds.
  5. Bake apples with cinnamon and brown sugar.
  6. Make a stew or slow cooker meal.
  7. Go to a festival.
  8. Go to a museum or art gallery.
  9. Stargaze. Try to catch a meteor shower (Draconids is just around the corner).
  10. Attend an open air market of any variety.
  11. Dress up for Halloween.
  12. Visit a cemetery. Pay your respects, clean up the graves, and take in the atmosphere.
  13. Watch the Sweeney Todd stage show. 1982 is my favorite version, but this one is on YouTube in its entirety.
  14. Watch a movie: Beetlejuice, Coco, Harry Potter series, Hocus Pocus, Interview with the Vampire, The Lord of the Rings series, Matilda – to name a few.
  15. Read: Frankenstein, anything by Edgar Allan Poe or H. P. Lovecraft, Coraline and Sandman series by Neil Gaiman, The Gunslinger and The Stand by Stephen King.
  16. If you exchange gifts in December, finish your shopping now so you’re not scrambling at the last minute.
  17. Take a walk outside. Photograph the seasonal changes.
  18. Collect pinecones, acorns, and evergreen branches for crafting. (Don’t forget to bake them so you don’t end up with Christmas maggots!)
  19. Make a pinecone bird feeder.
  20. Listen to my Villainous Playlist. I am overly pleased with this one. It was so much fun to build.

While my favorite season is winter, autumn is always a delight because it heralds my favorite type of weather. And now that I’m in England, the shortening of the day are WAY more pronounced. You know me – sunlight is not my friend, so this is great news!

Danny! Where are ya, Dan?
